When drawing from looking, I draw fast,
roaming the whole terrain over & over,
not dwelling overlong anywhere
until I know the paths of the land.
I look & mark softly at first,
defocusing on a pattern
of light & shade,
of warm & cool,
of moving & still.
An image emerges
of a solid body,
a flow of breath & senses,
a spark of being,
a living presence.
Within the overall pattern, I look for details,
& map them onto the foggy map I drew.
Details give character,
specificity,
reality.
I look at every thing as living.
I relate to it all with my own aliveness.
