{"id":871,"date":"2009-11-23T08:33:32","date_gmt":"2009-11-23T13:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fredhatt.com\/blog\/?p=871"},"modified":"2014-12-14T21:27:15","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T02:27:15","slug":"to-dance-a-landscape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/fredhatt.com\/blog\/2009\/11\/23\/to-dance-a-landscape\/","title":{"rendered":"To Dance a Landscape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=7769860&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/7769860\">November<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/fredhatt\">Fred Hatt<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>November<\/em> is a film I made in collaboration with dancer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elainesummersdance.com\/jungwoong.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jung Woong Kim<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u-turndancecompany.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">U-Turn Dance Company<\/a>.\u00a0 This is about as spontaneous as filmmaking can get.\u00a0 Jung Woong and I just met one day at Brooklyn&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospectpark.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\">Prospect Park<\/a>, walked around looking for suitable settings, and then filmed Jung Woong&#8217;s improvisations in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Most dance video makers nowadays seem to rely heavily on editing, choreographing by assembling moments of movement.\u00a0 Our approach, by contrast, was to find settings that would provide a frame or field of play, keeping the camera fixed and allowing mostly uninterrupted movement to sketch the spatial potential of the topology.<\/p>\n<p>There is no music, but the crunching and swishing of dry autumn leaves becomes a complex rhythmic composition.\u00a0 The urban aspect of the setting is expressed through the auditory environment, which includes aircraft, traffic, and distant voices.<\/p>\n<p>Before the advent of high definition video, this kind of <a href=\"http:\/\/userpages.umbc.edu\/~landon\/Local_Information_Files\/Mise-en-Scene.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>mise en sc\u00e8ne<\/em><\/a> approach required 35mm film.\u00a0 This video was made with a humble <a href=\"http:\/\/www.camcorderinfo.com\/content\/Canon-HV20-Camcorder-Review.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Canon HV20<\/a> (with wide angle adapter and external microphone), but the detail is sufficient to show texture and atmospheric depth in a long shot, which conveys a great deal about a dancer&#8217;s exploration of the possibilities of a natural space.<\/p>\n<p>If your computer can handle high definition video, check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vimeo.com\/7769860\" target=\"_blank\">HD version<\/a> on Vimeo.<\/p>\n<p>Here are three still frames from the video:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_886\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-886\" class=\"size-full wp-image-886\" title=\"fredhatt-jungwoongkim-November-01\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fredhatt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/fredhatt-jungwoongkim-November-01.jpg?resize=650%2C366\" alt=\"Still from &quot;November&quot;, 2009, a video by Jung Woong Kim &amp;
