\nThese are the seven deadly sins, as named by Pope Gregory I in 590:<\/p>\n

pride<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (ego-drive, narcissism)
\ngreed<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (avarice, money-madness)
\nwrath<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (rage, anger, hatred)
\nenvy<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong> (resentment, spite)
\nlust<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (lechery, sex-abuse)
\ngluttony<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em> (overindulgence, waste)
\nsloth<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 (laziness, negligence, apathy)<\/p>\n

Do you recognize all of these in your Newsfeed? In your town?<\/p>\n

They describe not so much evil acts,
\nbut common human failings, weaknesses,
\nthat may be destructive to the life of the sinner &or those around them.<\/p>\n

These failings are timeless aspects of human nature,
\nwith us today just as much as they were in 590 AD.
\nThey figure in every comedy and every tragedy.
\nPerfectly natural. Nothing to be ashamed of,
\nbut things to be aware of and to protect against.<\/p>\n

All programs to eliminate them have failed.
\nPunishment is cruel and poorly preventive.
\nBlaming & Shaming give pain but no gain.
\nHigh Ideals & Reason don’t make people rational or idealistic.
\nPiety doesn’t make people saints.<\/p>\n

If we put sin outside ourselves, blame it on demons,
\non other people or groups, on society,
\nwe fail to find these weaknesses in ourselves,
\nwhere we can work on them.<\/p>\n

Not to say we don’t need to work on society as well<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Make Beauty\u00a0 .\u00a0 Keep an Open Mind\u00a0 .\u00a0 Be Kind<\/p>\n
